Accidents happen. It’s a fact of life and, sometimes, a fact of death. What doesn’t need to happen, however, is for motorists to run away from their accidents. But that’s what’s happening all too often in the San Fernando Valley. According to police statistics, there were 8,325 hit-and-run collisions reported in the Valley in 2005. That’s a tremendous number of people not willing to accept the responsibility for the mayhem, injury and even death they cause. Something’s very wrong with the state of our public health that this type of cowardly act occurs in the thousands among otherwise law-abiding citizens. Police suspect that the majority of hit-and-run drivers are unlicensed or drunk. Neither explanation provides much in the way of consolation.
