Hitter of the Week – Preston Faulkner, Southeastern Louisiana – Sophomore – Outfielder – Denham Springs, La.Faulkner went 9-for-17 in four contests, stroking five doubles and scoring five runs to go along with three RBIs and a pair of walks. The sophomore’s totals at the plate included at on-base percentage of .579 and an .824 slugging percentage. Faulkner hit .529 in four games to help the Lions (21-19, 12-6 in SLC) secure three victories last week. One of those wins, a 3-1 decision over Nicholls on Friday, included a dominant performance from Gaconi on the mound. The senior allowed four hits en route to his fifth career complete game. Pitcher of the Week – Corey Gaconi, Southeastern Louisiana – Senior – Pitcher – Metairie, La.The righthander turned in another sterling performance in Friday’s series opener, tossing his fifth career complete game. Gaconi scattered four hits while fanning a career-high 11 batters. The only run scored by Nicholls was unearned, coming after a fielding error. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots. FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana outfielder Preston Faulkner is the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week and teammate Corey Gaconi is the Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday. SLU travels to take on intrastate foe Tulane on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. CT, before resuming conference play with a three-game set at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi that begins with a 6 p.m. tilt Friday. His 2.20 ERA is the third-best in the Southland this season. The Metairie, La., native now ranks 10th all-time in innings pitched (267) and is tied for 10th with 38 career starts in Lions’ program history. The recognition is Gaconi’s second this season; he claimed pitcher of the week honors on April 1. The Lions began the week with a 12-3 win over McNeese on Tuesday, before splitting a doubleheader with the Colonels on Friday, and then rolling to an 11-1 win in Saturday’s series finale. The Denham Springs, La., product’s three doubles against McNeese make him the first Lions hitter with three doubles in a single game since February 2014. His five hits in the weekend series came against a Colonels staff that entered the weekend boasting the league’s best staff ERA.
