Momentum with Man U as Liverpool head to Old Trafford

first_imgMANCHESTER CITYIn another match between teams from Merseyside and Manchester on Sunday, City could give a debut to Brazil forward Gabriel Jesus against Everton following his arrival at the club this month. City manager Pep Guardiola also was boosted this week by the return of club captain Vincent Kompany to full training for the first time since hurting his knee against Crystal Palace in November.City are in fourth place in the standings. MANCHESTER, England (AP) :With Manchester United on their longest winning run in eight years, it’s tempting to conclude that a giant of English football is starting to resemble the force of old. Some perspective is needed, however, when assessing United’s nine straight victories in all competitions since December 8.Only one of their opponents in that one-month period could be classed as a major rival: Tottenham. And that 1-0 win came on December 11, when Spurs weren’t showing the kind of form they are at present.Otherwise, United have proved to be ruthless in sweeping aside teams who most likely won’t finish higher than mid-table in the Premier League or were plucky underdogs in cup competitions, like Reading in the FA Cup or Zorya Luhansk in the Europa League.Bigger tests lie in wait for United and they start with the visit of Liverpool in the league on Sunday. What is traditionally the biggest game on the English football calendar is a chance for United’s players to prove they really are a force to be reckoned with this year and that, maybe, they could still be title contenders.Win at Old Trafford and United would close to within two points of Liverpool, who head into the 21st round of games in second place. First-place Chelsea have a 10-point cushion over United with half the season gone, and play champions Leicester away tomorrow. It will be interesting to see how United manager Jose¥ Mourinho approaches the game against Liverpool. He deployed defensive tactics to grind out a 0-0 draw at Anfield on October 17, bringing the free-scoring Liverpool juggernaut to a halt. And he couldn’t hide his satisfaction at neutralising a team he sarcastically labelled as “the last wonder of the world”.Three months later, United will be expected to be more attacking at Old Trafford, especially since that’s the way the team has played during its winning run, when goals have come much easier. Should striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic shrug off an illness to play, the 35-year-old Swedish striker will be looking to add to a record of 12 goals in his last 12 games. There’s no doubt that Mourinho has United purring, with their attacking play quicker and sharper now that Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are fixtures in the team and in more advanced roles. It might also be a good time to play Liverpool, even if the Reds have won four of their last six league games including against Manchester City and Everton and drawn the other two to become Chelsea’s closest challengers.Sadio Mane¥, one of Liverpool’s brightest attacking sparks this season, has just left for the African Cup of Nations, while Philippe Coutinho, another member of the lively forward line, has only recently returned from injury. There are doubts over whether two key members of Liverpool’s defensive set-up holding midfielder Jordan Henderson and centre back Joel Matip will start after injuries, too.A day after United beat Hull 2-0 in the first leg of the League Cup semi-finals for their longest run of wins since January-February 2009, Liverpool were fortunate to escape with only a 1-0 loss at Southampton in the first leg of the other semi-final on Wednesday.”It would be cool if we could already show a reaction at the weekend,” Liverpool manager J¸rgen Klopp said, “because we probably need a better performance to get something at Old Trafford”.Momentum, suddenly, has swung United’s way ahead of the latest battle with their northwest neighbours.EVERTON vslast_img read more

Teen gets 10 years jail for killing CD vendor

first_imgEighteen-year-old Eton Calistro was on Monday sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by High Court Judge Sandil Kissoon for stabbing a a CD vendor to death July 18, 2015 at Soesdyke, on the East Bank of Demerara.Jailed teenager: Eton CalistroUpon the State’s murder indictment, Calistro, who plead not guilty to the murder of 21-year-old Leroy Moore, called “Jim Carrey”, admitted guilt to the lesser count of manslaughter.State Counsels Abigail Gibbs and Mandell Moore appeared for the prosecution while attorneys George Thomas and Sonia Parag defended Calistro. According to the facts of the case presented by Prosecutor Gibbs, the labourer, who was just 15 years old at the time of his crime, went to a bar with his two brothers and while there, the deceased, Moore “hustled” a female, which annoyed Calistro. The court heard that the two had an exchange of words, after which, Calistro left with his siblings. Moore was with seven other males at the time. The prosecutor further explained that after they left the bar and went to Soesdyke, the accused and the deceased met up and had a scuffle. Moore was stabbed twice and succumbed whilst being transported to hospital. A post-mortem examination revealed he died from perforation to the heart and lungs due to stab wounds. In plea of mitigation, the defence attorney, George Thomas, informed the court that his client was defending himself as Calistro saw himself as a victim in the matter. Thomas pointed to alcohol consumption being a notable factor of the incident while his client begged the court’s mercy. Prosecutor Gibbs observed that even though the killing was unfortunate due to ages involved; persons must face the consequences for their actions. She contended that a period of incarceration could give the offender an opportunity to reflect on what he had done so that he would not repeat his crime. After a brief adjournment, Justice Kissoon passed down sentence, observing the impact that alcohol had on the events that led to the outcome. He started at a base of 25 years for manslaughter and deducted one-third of the sentence for acceptance of guilt; three years for time spent on remand and three years, six months for his age and other mitigating factors. In July, Calistro appeared before Justice Brassington Reynolds and pleaded not guilty to both murder and manslaughter after reportedly telling his then lawyer, Stanley Moore that he indented to plead guilty to manslaughter. Those proceedings were discontinued, and he was ordered to appear before another Judge.Moore was a former resident of Caneview Avenue, South Ruimveldt Gardens.last_img read more
