Gareth Southgate REJECTS offer to succeed Hodgson as England manager – reports

first_imgGareth Southgate has rejected the opportunity to succeed Roy Hodgson as England manager, according to reports. The 45-year-old has been touted as an ‘obvious’ successor to Hodgson following the veteran’s resignation from his post, but Southgate has no plans to leave his current role in charge of the Under-21s and taint his career with the senior job.He would have not been the most inspiring option, and few fans have lobbied for the former Middlesbrough boss to be hired given his struggles at club level, even though he has somewhat impressed at youth level with the Three Lions.Despite crashing out of the 2015 Under-21 European Championship as the last placed team in Group B, he led his team on a successful campaign at the Toulon Tournament, beating hosts France 2-1 in the final.Southgate won 57 caps for the Three Lions as a player, but he reportedly wants to remain with the Under-21s, before taking on a club job to further his career. 1 Gareth Southgate is set to remain as England Under-21 manager last_img read more
